Review: Orchard Cafe newly revamped Straits Cuisine Buffet Orchard Hotel

IMG_4300

Yes, this March 2014
The very sweet people of Orchard  Hotel once again invite myself and Karen to have the first taste of the newly revamped menu of the Straits Cuisine
I’m actually very impressed with the professional invitation that was handed to every one of us present at the event~

If you remember my post exactly one year ago
dining at the Straits Cafe of Orchard Hotel Singapore
you may find this very familiar

Dinner @ Baba Theatre Kitchen Orchard Hotel

With Executive Chef Paul’s amazing creations with several fusions of the traditional Peranakan and modern day dishes
there were just too many surprises hidden for us!

Executive Chef Paul Then

Executive Chef Paul will be hanging up a dazzling array of perfectly Asian roasts, ranging from Roast Pork Belly, Roast Duck to Roast Chicken and Char Siew. He will be showcasing his signature dishes like Nyonya Hokkien Mee, Fish Curry, Steamed Black Cod Otah, Sambal Sting Ray in Banana Leaves, Steamed Carrot Cake with Mushrooms and Chinese Sausages, Ngoh Hiang, Cincaluk Omelette and the perennial Oyster Omelette!

Every table was laid with generous servings of sauces…
With the chilli and soured vegetables being my favourite!

For a start, the appetisers came through in the form of
Prawn & Mango Salad
Nonya Fish Salad with Achar
Soya Duck with Chili Vinegar Dip

IMG_4302

I’m usually not a “duck-person” but this soya duck was essentially the nicest ones I’ve had
Cooked so well as I’m always afraid of the redness found in duck meat
The Achar reminds me of the ones my mother used to feed me with everyday during my childhood, but she had since stopped making it herself

Crabmeat Kueh Pie Tee with Buah Keluak Caviar

topped with “Nyonya Caviar” also known as  Buah Keluak
This Ultimate Kueh Pie Tee was extremely well received at the recent Ultimate Hawker Fest 2013.

IMG_4304

The “caviar” has made the common looking kueh pie tee become really “high-class”
The social status of it just boomed suddenly~

Crabmeat Poh Piah with Crispy Crackers

IMG_4307

IMG_4309

Disecting the pohpiah makes it seems pretty blend and tasteless
You should never judge a book by its cover
The perfect mix of crabmeat with the turnip slices melts in your mouth

The Nyonya Laksa

IMG_4312

A permanent feature in any form of Peranakan Cuisine
If you’re a chilli person like me… I’ve multiplied that chilli serving by 4 times right after snapping this photo!

IMG_4310

Black Cod Fish Otah

I’ve never seen Otah served in this manner
let alone see otah made with Black Cod Fish!
Incredibly smooth and I would be happy to spread this on my bread every morning for breakfast!

The next few dishes are the usual stars of the cafe that has been covered in my previous year’s post

It was a pity that I was unable to stay for the famous durian desserts!
Ultimate regret till now but I really had to attend to another appointment
thus, no photos from my cammie
Nonetheless, I shall show you the professional shots of the desserts from the cafe
