KoMJ 27x40

Happy Chinese New Year Everyone!
Amongst all the feasting and CNY-movie watching, I finally could sit down and write these reviews!

Clover Films has kept me busy with 3 movies that was officially released on 19th February
With the extra long weekend we have, I’m sure many of us would be flocking to the cinemas since there’s not much other activities available other than gambling and watching movies

King of Mahjong would be the best combination and would even inspire you to gamble the entire season away!

Held at Resorts World Sentosa, I attended the Press Conference and Red Carpet event on the Gala Premiere of King of Mahjong
Ever since getting news of the release in 2014, I have been looking forward to catch our local comedy king, Mark Lee in action!
I even had my NOTD themed for mahjong!

Official Movie Synopsis

“King of Mahjong” centres on the decade-long feud and eventual reunion of Wong Tin Ba (Mark Lee) and Ah Fatt (Chapman To), two top disciples of the legendary mahjong maestro, Master Ru.

20 years later, Wong Tin Ba, who is now a world-acclaimed mahjong champion and magnate, shows up in Ipoh to challenge Fatt to a final showdown – The World Mahjong Championship. Despite Wong’s insistence, Fatt declines to join the competition as he is determined and contented to lead the life of a commoner.

In a bid to force Fatt into the showdown, Wong abducts Fatt’s wife, Ramona (Michelle Ye), and threatens her to be on his alliance. Fatt has no choice but to join the championship as Wong holds his wife hostage. On the mahjong table, Fatt and Wong compete as the finalists; Master Ru’s secret legendary mahjong move and the truth comes to light as the winner emerges…

I can’t even remember when was the last time we had a movie based on the theme of mahjong solely
For everyone who knows me, they hail me as the mahjong queen
I would think that’s an understatement, I’m more like a mahjong addict
– LOL –

I guess I placed high expectations for King of Mahjong
since the collaboration of Mark Lee and Chapman To seem like a lethal combo for laughter
Funny men did not fail us
It was even better as the Hong Kong and Malaysian actors were not dubbed
Cantonese was actually allowed to be broadcast
which gave the movie its original sense of humour

The plot was more focused on emotional ties and life values
Mahjong skills were not really featured
From the Press Conference, we found out that most of the cast have no prior mahjong skills
Not even friendly games among friends
That was how I spotted so many scenes where the actors could not successfully deliver the role of a professional player

What I meant by ‘professional’ …
refers to a normal person who is so used to playing with mahjong tiles all the time that there’s a certain style to stacking, drawing and arranging the tiles
This definitely could not be seen in the movie
Actors and actresses cast as highly skilled players or even housewife
should be been more ‘pro’

The winning cards are also always predictable and repetitive
Hence, from mahjong skills perspective
I would say that King of Mahjong reflects an amateurish aspect of the game

IMG_5836

Nonetheless, we all know we can always depend on Mark Lee and Chapman To to deliver the necessary release of laughter to us

For those of you who have not have the chance to watch it yet
and have little knowledge of mahjong
This would be a relaxing movie to tide you through and work your laughing bones
For the similar mahjong addicts like me,
you would have to lower your expectations and there would be no highlights for you
