Korean Horror Movie Review: The Tunnel

The Tunnel 27x40

A film released in Korea last August
reminds me very much of another horror movie – As Above, So Below
revolving the tunneling site of the Catacombs in Paris

THE TUNNEL (10)

Official Synopsis

A group of friends are invited to the launching party of a luxurious resort in the mountains before it officially opens for business. The party takes place at the nearby abandoned coal mine that is being turned into an experience hall. Just when the party gets into full swing, a strange man barges in declaring that they will all get killed by the curse, scaring everyone away. They return to the resort to find the strange man watching them and end up killing him by accident. They decide to throw away the body in the coal mine, but get caught inside the dark tunnels facing the buried horrors within.

THE TUNNEL (08)

The Tunnel is based on an abandoned coal mine site
that has plans to be developed into an exhibition hall so that it can always be remembered
We are in the know of how risky a coal miner’s job can be
and also heard of stories where bodies are buried in the deep tunnels and can never be excavated

THE TUNNEL (14)

The Tunnel 3D serves to provide visual entertainment only if you are catching the 3D version
I previewed the movie in 2D and I can see why many scenes are included for the very fact that they would look good for 3D audiences

THE TUNNEL (02)

‘Gooey-Black Blood’ gushes all over from a rainshower
Floating photograph in the air
Camera zooming out of the tunnelGhostly head popping out through the mirror

All these are just examples of scenes that would be pleasing for the 3D spectators
Otherwise, very unnecessary in my view

THE TUNNEL (11)

This is probably the best eye candy in the whole film

THE TUNNEL (12)

After watching the trailer and the movie stills, I expected the usual horror story unfolding
But I was wrong
For once, there is no real haunting
In fact, none of the characters were real dead people
Having the horror genre is a little misleading, but for the weak-hearted – this can potentially be horror to you

THE TUNNEL (04)

Everything was just an illusion
majorly caused by carbon monoxide poisoning if you do not have proper respiratory equipments deep in the mining tunnels

THE TUNNEL (03)

THE TUNNEL (17)

Eun-Joo, the lead of the movie
***
Seems like it was pure coincidence that she attended the launch party with her friends
But there was a deeper plot within
A subconscious revenge for her father who was never rescued from the mines

THE TUNNEL (13)

This is perhaps the mildest level of a thriller for me
If you’re in for small ride, you may enjoy it!
